Statue
created - c.1702-1703
In April 1702 Ferretti began work on the statue which he
delivered the following year.
Sculptor
- Giuseppe Ferretti During 1703 he received two payments,
for 20 and 10 scudi, then a final payment for 50 scudi. This
is the only know work of Ferretti. The treatment of
drapery and hair recalls the two statues, Sts Nereus (88) and
Achilleus (89)
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine He is depicted as a mature
man with a beard, in Roman dress with a short tunic and cloak
over his right shoulder. His left hand hold the palm of
martyrdom.
The
legendary tutor of St Vitus (74). According to the
legend, Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia were martyrs under
Diocletian. Due to a lack of historical information, Vitus and
Crescentia were removed from the Roman Martyrology 2001.
